How is the spine width worked out?
The spine is the page count multiplied by the thickness of one page of your paper, using the figure Amazon KDP or IngramSpark publishes for that paper. A wrong spine is the most common reason a self-published cover comes back from the printer.
The 412 page default on cream paper has a spine of 26.16mm. The spine calculator does the same sum for any page count, free.
What size is a book cover template?
The full wrap is two covers plus the spine plus bleed, so it depends on your trim, page count and paper: the 412 page example comes to 337.31 × 234.95mm. The print spec sheet in the download states the real trim, spine and fold positions for your book.
Who are these book cover templates for?
Authors publishing a paperback through print on demand who need a cover a printer will accept at the first upload. Title, subtitle, author, blurb, colours and the spine all change in the editor.
Common questions
Do these covers work for Amazon KDP and IngramSpark?
The spine uses the paper thickness each printer publishes, and the bleed and barcode area follow their requirements. Check the finished PDF against your printer's own cover template before you upload it.
Can I put text on a thin spine?
Not below 79 pages. KDP requires a blank spine under that, and the template leaves it blank for you.
